Robert Downey Jr. is back in Marvel territory, but the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer puts him in a very different suit of trouble.
Marvel Entertainment has released the trailer for the next Avengers film, and Mashable reports that Downey, who previously played Tony Stark and Iron Man, appears this time as Doctor Doom. The character is traditionally tied to the Fantastic Four as one of their major foes.
The trailer also brings Chris Evans back into the mix, according to Mashable, with Steve Rogers named among the returning Avengers figures. Evans is included in the film’s cast list alongside a long roll call of Marvel regulars and crossover favorites.
A Marvel roll call with no quiet corner
Mashable reports that Avengers: Doomsday pulls from several corners of Marvel’s screen universe, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Thunderbolts and Wakanda.
The Fantastic Four are part of the lineup, as are Avengers characters including Ant-Man, Captain America, The Winter Soldier and Thor, according to the report. Loki and Shang-Chi are also listed among the characters joining the action.
Wakanda is represented too, with Mashable reporting that the warriors of Wakanda appear, including the new Black Panther. The Thunderbolts side of the roster includes Yelena, John Walker, the Red Guardian and Ghost.
The X-Men are also in the fray. According to Mashable, Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Mystique and Gambit are among the mutant characters featured in the movie’s superhero pileup.
The cast list is doing laps
Along with Downey and Evans, Mashable lists Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell and Channing Tatum among the film’s performers.
The roster also includes Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Letitia Wright and Lewis Pullman, according to the report.
Kelsey Grammer, Kathryn Newton, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Mabel Cadena and Tenoch Huerta Mejia are also listed as appearing in the film.
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing Avengers: Doomsday, according to Mashable. The brothers previously became closely associated with Marvel’s Avengers saga through earlier ensemble entries, though the current report only identifies them as the directors of this new film.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 18, according to Mashable. Based on the trailer’s lineup, Marvel is setting up a crossover built around familiar Avengers faces, newer franchise branches and the return of actors fans already know from earlier Marvel chapters.
