Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 teaser has arrived from San Diego Comic-Con, giving the first look at Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer in the next chapter of the sci-fi franchise.
The preview, revealed by Prime Video, drops viewers back into a rain-slicked, neon-heavy Los Angeles with a very different power structure. The sequel series is set 50 years after Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, with Ridley Scott, director of the original Blade Runner, serving as an executive producer.
What is Blade Runner 2099 about?
Blade Runner 2099 follows a Los Angeles reshaped by a replicant uprising, according to Prime Video’s teaser details. Replicants, the franchise’s synthetic humans, are now in charge, though blade runners still exist to track down replicants who break the rules.
Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant blade runner chasing a group of missing replicants who have gone rogue. Prime Video’s description says Olwen has only days left to live, putting a hard clock on her mission.
Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who becomes a blade runner as a way to stop living on the run. The teaser shows Cora racing through Los Angeles before Olwen captures her, setting up a partnership that begins with friction rather than trust.
The central push of the preview is their hunt for the runaways, with the city’s fragile state hanging over the search. Prime Video’s footage also brings back the Voight-Kampff test, the franchise’s famous method for examining whether someone is human or replicant.
Who is in the Blade Runner 2099 cast?
Along with Yeoh and Schafer, the cast listed for the project includes Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi.
The series follows a long gap between screen installments. Blade Runner 2049, directed by Villeneuve, continued the world first established in Scott’s 1982 film. Blade Runner 2099 pushes the timeline another half-century forward, with a city where the old hunter-and-prey lines have become messier.
Prime Video’s teaser positions Olwen and Cora as the show’s unlikely central duo: one a replicant with little time left, the other a human fugitive trying to outrun her past. Their first look suggests the hunt for rogue replicants will double as a fight to keep Los Angeles from sliding into collapse.
Blade Runner 2099 is set for Prime Video. A linked Prime Video listing accompanying the teaser gives a Nov. 20 premiere date.
