Claude chats in Google Search exposed some shared conversations

Some shared Claude chats in Google Search were reportedly visible to the public after conversations made for sharing were indexed by Google, according to Reddit users who flagged the issue over the weekend.
The problem did not involve Claude’s default private chats, according to the reporting. It centered on conversations that users had chosen to share through Anthropic’s built-in sharing tool, which creates a static page for the chat.
Reddit users said those shared pages could be found through Google by searching for site:claude.ai/share, a search query that surfaces indexed pages under that URL pattern.
According to Reddit posts cited in the reporting, exposed examples allegedly included a user working on a crypto wallet who revealed currency keys, and a lawyer asking Claude for advice about whether they had to self-report a conduct breach.
Google appears to have removed the shared Claude conversations from its search results, according to Mashable. Mashable said it contacted Anthropic for more information.
Why were Claude chats showing up in Google Search?
Claude conversations are private by default, but Anthropic offers a feature that lets users share selected chats. When a user shares one, Anthropic creates a web page that other people can open through the shared link.
The issue, according to the reporting, was that those shared pages were also indexable by search engines. That meant Google could crawl and list the pages in search results if it discovered them.
A common way to prevent that is a “noindex” tag, a piece of code that tells search engines not to list a page. The reporting said Anthropic did not appear to have used those tags on the shared Claude pages at issue.
That distinction matters: a shared page is no longer just a private chat sitting inside a user account. It becomes a web page, and unless blocked from indexing, it can potentially be collected by search engines.
Has this happened with AI chatbots before?
Yes. The same kind of privacy problem has hit AI chatbot sharing tools before, according to the reporting.
Last year, ChatGPT users found that shared conversations were being indexed by Google. OpenAI removed the feature after users began discovering those shared chats in search results, Mashable reported at the time.
Claude has also faced a similar issue before. Forbes reported that shared Anthropic chatbot transcripts appeared in Google Search about a month after the ChatGPT incident. Anthropic addressed that earlier case by saying it had blocked search engine crawlers, according to the reporting.
The latest discovery suggests that some shared Claude chats were still ending up in Google’s index despite that prior action.
How can I check my shared Claude chats?
If you have not shared any Claude conversations, the reporting says there is no indication your private chats were exposed. The issue involved only chats that users had shared.
If you have used Claude’s sharing feature, you can review the list from your account. Log in to Claude, open Settings, go to Privacy, select Shared Chats, and choose Manage.
From there, users should be able to see shared conversations and turn sharing off for any of them, according to the instructions reported by Mashable.
