The Furious Becky death in episode 3 has a blunt explanation from star Lola Petticrew: Catherine sees the shelter worker as another person who exploits someone vulnerable.
Elizabeth Meriwether’s Hulu crime drama has rolled out three episodes so far, and it has already mapped a grim pattern around Petticrew’s character. Episode 1 introduced a mysterious woman who kills men inside their homes, while episode 2 showed the method behind the terror, including manipulation, drugging and a fatal hostage situation.
Episode 3 shifts that danger toward Becky, a domestic violence shelter case worker played by Chloe Troast. Becky meets Catherine while Catherine is hiding at the shelter under the name Jinny, which she took from a girl she mugged in the first episode, according to Mashable.
Catherine first appears to use attraction to get Becky to bend the shelter’s rules. The situation then moves into blackmail, with Becky eventually bringing Catherine a bag that includes cleaning supplies and a new wig.
Becky tries to end the arrangement after making the delivery. Catherine then draws her into Central Park with the promise of weed and the suggestion of another hookup, according to Mashable’s recap of the episode. Becky’s body is later found there.
Why was Becky killed in Furious?
In an interview with Mashable, Petticrew said Catherine’s logic comes down to Becky’s treatment of someone she believes is in crisis. Becky does not know Catherine’s real identity or what she is capable of when she works with her at the shelter.
From Catherine’s point of view, Petticrew said, Becky has taken advantage of a vulnerable person. Petticrew told Mashable that, for Catherine, Becky has to go, adding that Becky is “just as bad as any man.”
That explanation places Becky’s death inside the show’s larger pattern while also tweaking the audience’s expectations. Earlier episodes center Catherine’s violence against men, then episode 3 shows that her sense of who deserves punishment is not limited by gender.
The show also distinguishes Becky from Mira, the daughter who wandered into the crime scene earlier in the season. Mashable notes that Mira did not suffer Catherine’s violence, while Becky does after becoming entangled with Catherine at the shelter.
Where to watch Furious
The first three episodes of Furious are streaming on Hulu. New episodes are scheduled to arrive every Monday through Aug. 31, according to Mashable.
The series stars Lola Petticrew as the killer operating under multiple identities, including Jinny, Vanessa and Catherine. Chloe Troast appears as Becky, whose brief connection with Catherine becomes one of the season’s early turning points.
