A Silver Spring mother and daughter-in-law have claimed their second $50,000 lottery prize together. The Maryland in-laws' second lottery prize came from the Sept. 18 Mega Millions drawing, with the pair collecting the money at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Oct. 5, according to the Maryland Lottery.

Their ticket matched four of the first five numbers drawn and the Mega Ball, a third-tier result. It followed another $50,000 third-tier prize the two claimed in Powerball in December 2024.

How did the Mega Millions ticket reach $50,000?

The Sept. 18 ticket was initially worth $10,000, the Maryland Lottery said. The pair had added the Megaplier option, and the drawing's 5X multiplier raised the prize to $50,000.

The women have kept playing the same numbers after first buying a Quick Pick Mega Millions ticket several years ago, according to the lottery. The daughter-in-law said they credit the repeat approach for their wins, but the lottery said selecting particular numbers does not change a player's odds.

The daughter-in-law spotted the Sept. 18 winning numbers online the next day and thought they looked familiar, the Maryland Lottery said. She then remembered the ticket and called her mother-in-law, who said she checked it five times before believing it had won.

She took the ticket to the Exxon at 8384 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, where it had been bought, to confirm the result. UPI also reported that the in-laws verified the ticket at the Colesville Road station.

What did the pair do with their first lottery prize?

Their 2024 Powerball money helped family members and reduced some debt, according to the Maryland Lottery. The mother and daughter-in-law said their plan for the latest $50,000 is much the same.

The pair plan to keep playing Mega Millions and Powerball, along with Maryland's Multi-Match game, the lottery said. Their two prizes were earned in separate multi-state drawings: the earlier Powerball win in December 2024 and the latest Mega Millions result from Sept. 18.
