The first Mike Flanagan Carrie trailer has arrived, giving Stephen King’s telekinetic horror classic a modern Prime Video makeover ahead of its Oct. 7 premiere.
The eight-part miniseries adapts King’s 1974 novel about Carrie White, a bullied schoolgirl who is mistreated at home by her intensely religious mother, Margaret, while discovering she has telekinetic abilities.
According to the trailer, Flanagan’s version shifts the story into the present day. The new footage shows a world shaped by social media and public online humiliation, updating the setting from King’s original novel.
The approach echoes one earlier screen version in at least one respect: the 2013 film adaptation also moved the story into a modern setting.
What does the Carrie trailer show?
The trailer presents Carrie White’s isolation at school, her troubled home life with Margaret, and the first signs of her dangerous powers. It also points to viral humiliation as a key part of the new version’s teen nightmare.
Carrie is one of King’s best-known horror stories, built around a young woman whose psychic powers emerge while she is being pushed by cruelty at school and control at home. Flanagan’s series is the first full episodic television adaptation of the story.
That does not make it Carrie’s first appearance on television. A 2002 TV movie version was directed by David Carson, written by Bryan Fuller of Hannibal, and starred Angela Bettis, known for Girl, Interrupted, as Carrie.
Who is in Mike Flanagan’s Carrie?
Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White in the new miniseries. Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret, Siena Agudong appears as Sue Snell, and Matthew Lillard plays Principal Grayle.
The ensemble also includes Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, and Joel Oulette.
Flanagan, whose credits include The Haunting of Hill House, is serving as writer and showrunner. He is also directing four of the eight episodes.
When does Mike Flanagan’s Carrie premiere?
Carrie premieres Oct. 7 on Prime Video. The series runs for eight episodes.
For horror fans, the big draw is clear: King’s first published novel is being stretched into a full miniseries by a filmmaker closely associated with modern streaming horror, with a cast built around a new Carrie White and a present-day spin on one of the genre’s most famous stories.
