Pokémon card facial recognition checks are coming to five pop-up Pokémon Card Store locations in Japan, with The Pokémon Company saying the system will police daily entry limits at the door.

The company announced that the temporary shops will run from July 31 through Aug. 6 at AEON Mall Natori, Chofu PARCO, AEON Mall Higashiura, AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu and AEON Mall Chikushino.

The pop-ups will sell exclusive Pokémon Trading Card Game cards and Pokémon Center merchandise, according to The Pokémon Company. That is exactly the kind of limited-stock setup that can turn a card drop into a reseller scramble.

UPI reported that scalping has been a major problem in the Pokémon TCG community, with resellers buying large quantities of limited-release cards and goods before offering them again at far higher prices.

Why is Pokémon using facial recognition at card stores?

The Pokémon Company said the scans are meant to support store safety, deter crime and make sure customers follow the entry and purchase rules. The key rule is blunt: each eligible customer gets one store entry per day.

Customers who are elementary school age or older will have to complete a facial recognition scan before entering, according to the company. If the system shows that a customer has already entered that day and tries to come back in, they will be refused at the entrance.

The company also warned customers not to stroll out and expect an easy return. Anyone who needs to step away briefly, including for a restroom break, must tell a nearby staff member before leaving, The Pokémon Company said.

If a customer exits temporarily without staff guidance or confirmation, the company said that person will not be allowed back inside. For collectors hoping to browse limited items, the message is clear: check in with staff before stepping out.

Where are the pop-up Pokémon Card Stores?

The five announced locations are spread across Japan. The sites named by The Pokémon Company are AEON Mall Natori, Chofu PARCO, AEON Mall Higashiura, AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu and AEON Mall Chikushino.

The company did not say how many shoppers will be allowed inside each location, how much exclusive inventory will be available or what specific buying limits will apply beyond the entry rules.

The Pokémon Company said the facial recognition data will be kept for an unspecified period before being deleted. The announcement did not give a precise deletion schedule.

For fans, the pop-ups offer a short run of exclusive Pokémon products. For resellers hoping to loop the line, the new door check adds a very modern hurdle: the store remembers your face.
