T-Mobile is dangling a free Apple iPhone 17 this weekend, but the deal is built around a two-year stay with the carrier, according to Mashable.

The offer covers the iPhone 17 for customers who trade in an eligible phone while on T-Mobile’s Experience More or Experience Beyond plan, Mashable reported. A separate promo puts the iPhone 17 Pro at no cost for customers who switch to T-Mobile, bring their number and sign up for the Experience Beyond plan, with no trade-in required.

Who can get the free iPhone 17

According to Mashable, the standard iPhone 17 offer requires two things: an eligible trade-in device and enrollment in either an Experience More or Experience Beyond plan.

The iPhone 17 Pro deal has a different route. Mashable reported that customers must move to T-Mobile, bring over their existing phone number and use the Experience Beyond plan. That version of the offer does not require a trade-in.

  • Apple iPhone 17: free with an eligible trade-in on an Experience More or Experience Beyond plan.
  • Apple iPhone 17 Pro: free for switchers who bring their number on an Experience Beyond plan, with no trade-in needed.

How the “free” part works

The phones are not handed over with no paperwork and no strings, according to Mashable. T-Mobile offsets the retail cost through 24 consecutive monthly bill credits.

That means the customer’s bill shows a regular financing charge for the phone, then a matching credit that cancels it out, Mashable reported. The setup effectively ties the savings to keeping the line active for the full 24-month period.

If a customer cancels service, leaves for another carrier or upgrades to the iPhone 18 before the 24 months are over, the remaining unpaid balance becomes due right away, according to Mashable.

Customers also still have upfront costs. Mashable reported that buyers must pay standard taxes and a one-time $35 activation fee.

Why the timing stands out

The T-Mobile promotion arrives as Samsung is getting attention ahead of its Unpacked event on July 22, where Mashable said the company is expected to launch its next batch of foldable phones.

For Apple fans, T-Mobile’s weekend iPhone offer gives the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro their own moment, though the fine print matters. The biggest takeaway from Mashable’s report: the phone can cost $0 after credits, but only if the customer meets the plan terms and sticks with T-Mobile long enough to receive every credit.
