Tyland Lannister resurfaces in House of the Dragon episode 5
The presumed Battle of the Gullet casualty returns as Aegon and Larys try to flee toward Essos.

Tyland Lannister is alive after all, and his return lands at the worst possible moment for Aegon and Larys Strong in House of the Dragon Season 3, episode 5.
Jefferson Hall’s character had last been seen during the Battle of the Gullet, when Admiral Lohar, played by Abigail Thorn, sent him over the side of a ship. Episode 5 brings him back in a cloak, interrupting a tense escape plan and adding one more problem to a journey already going badly.
The apparent reversal follows another recent survival reveal in the HBO series. Lord Corlys, played by Steve Toussaint, had also been treated as a possible casualty before the show made clear he was still in play.
Tyland crashes Aegon’s getaway plan
Episode 5 finds Larys Strong, played by Matthew Needham, trying to get Aegon, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, to stop chasing after his brother Aemond, played by Ewan Mitchell.
After confronting Aegon over the idea, Larys pushes him toward a different option: board a ship bound for Essos. Aegon appears to accept the plan, until a stranger speaks from nearby and asks which ship they mean.
The figure is Tyland Lannister. Larys recognizes him, and the moment confirms that Tyland survived the disaster at sea that seemed to remove him from the board.
The episode does not give a full survival story. It does not show how Tyland escaped the water, how he managed the trip from wherever he came ashore, or how he reached the place where Aegon and Larys have stopped.
The show hints at how he made it this far
Tyland’s brief follow-up scene gives the clearest clue. He tells Larys that he has men traveling with him. Larys identifies them as sellswords and suggests they do not look expensive.
That exchange points to a practical explanation: Tyland appears to have used Lannister money, or at least the power of the Lannister name, to hire enough protection to keep moving after the Battle of the Gullet.
His destination is Casterly Rock. Tyland wants Aegon and Larys to join him on the road there, turning his own scramble for safety into a possible route for the king and his adviser.
The plan is shaky from the start. The scene ends with Aegon killing a man after the man discovers his crown, putting the group in fresh danger before they can get anywhere near the Lannister seat.
