The Xbox outage today has knocked out key parts of Microsoft’s gaming services, with Xbox’s own status page listing “major outage” warnings across accounts, games, the store and mobile apps.
Video Games Chronicle reported that Microsoft’s games division confirmed service disruption affecting multiple areas of the Xbox online system. The company’s status page identified problems in four categories: Account & Profile, Games & Gaming, Store & Subscriptions, and Apps & Mobile.
For players, the pain is direct: sign-in trouble, game-launch failures, missing store listings and app problems. Xbox said the issues had been identified across all four affected service areas, with a fix still pending.
What is affected by the Xbox outage?
The Account & Profile warning said users may be unable to sign in, may be kicked out during a session, or may lose access to features that depend on sign-in. Xbox listed most games, apps and social features among the services that may be affected.
The Games & Gaming category was also under a major outage notice. On the Store & Subscriptions side, Xbox said some games may not show up in the Store. The Apps & Mobile category flagged trouble with launching apps.
Outage-tracking site Downdetector showed game launching as the leading user complaint, accounting for 65 percent of reported problems. Gameplay issues made up 13 percent, while server connection complaints accounted for 12 percent.
What has Xbox said about the problem?
The official Xbox Support account acknowledged the disruption on Sunday morning. It said engineers were “actively working to mitigate” errors tied to sign-in, game libraries and game launches, and directed players to the Xbox status page for further updates.
In a follow-up posted at 2:03 p.m. EST, Team Xbox said its teams were “focused on multiple investigation angles” and remained at work. The update said more details would be shared when available.
Xbox had not listed the outage as fixed on the status page described by the company, with all four affected service areas still showing that the issue had been identified and a fix was pending.
How does this compare with the recent PlayStation outage?
The disruption follows a separate PlayStation Network outage one week earlier. Video Games Chronicle reported that the PSN problem began shortly after the open beta launch for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.
That PlayStation outage left PS5 users unable to access PSN and games that required sign-in, according to VGC. Xbox’s current service problem is hitting similar pressure points for players: logging in, opening games and using online-dependent features.
