Adam Sandler landed on Nantucket with basketball on the brain, and the local police department ended up playing concierge.
Audio released by the Nantucket Police Department captured the comedian calling the department’s non-emergency line on July 5 to ask where he could find an outdoor court, according to TMZ. Sportico also shared the clip on X, saying Sandler had contacted police to find a place to play basketball.
In the call, Sandler told the dispatcher he was visiting the island and wanted to know whether there were any outdoor courts where people actually play. He did not identify himself during the exchange, according to TMZ.
The dispatcher treated the request like any other local-info call. After thinking it over, the dispatcher told Sandler there appeared to be one available option and gave him the details, TMZ reported.
Sandler thanked the dispatcher and said he would check it out, according to the released audio.
The tip apparently worked. TMZ reported that Sandler later got into a pickup basketball game with a group of men at a court on Backus Lane, behind The Muse & Pizza Joint.
Nantucket Current posted on X on July 6 that Sandler had been on the island and stopped for a game at the Backus Lane court. The outlet said the sighting came less than 48 hours after Sandler officiated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at Madison Square Garden.
TMZ reported that the wedding took place July 3 in New York City, with Sandler marrying Swift and Kelce in front of hundreds of celebrities, friends and relatives.
For Sandler, the Nantucket stop was a quick pivot from tuxedo-level celebrity ceremony to outdoor hoops. The audio shows the actor keeping the call low-key, asking the same question any visitor might ask after getting to town: where is the run?
The call also fits Sandler’s long-running public association with basketball. TMZ’s report connected the Nantucket pickup game to the actor’s post-wedding island visit, while Sportico’s X post highlighted the novelty of Sandler phoning police for court intel.
No further details were given about how long Sandler played, who joined the game or whether the dispatcher later learned who had called. What is clear from the police audio and the subsequent Nantucket Current post is that Sandler got pointed toward a court and made it there.
