The deaths came about two years after a Reddit account linked to Mandy described serious problems in the marriage, including an alleged affair, according to The Detroit News.
The Detroit News reported that it independently tied the Reddit account, under the username “MandyK1179,” to Mandy by comparing details including marriage dates, children, ages, jobs and where the family lived.
What did the Reddit account say about the marriage?
According to The Detroit News, the account wrote in 2024 that Mandy’s husband had cheated with a younger intern. The post described the alleged affair as involving an intern who was the same age Mandy had been when she was an intern, according to the newspaper.
The account also described emotional fallout after the alleged cheating, saying the writer spent about a year blaming herself before concluding she had to show up for herself, The Detroit News reported.
In posts in the “As One After Infidelity” subreddit, the account said the marriage continued in large part because of the children, according to the newspaper. The account described the couple as being in a better place several years later, though still working to keep the relationship healthy.
The same Reddit writing also referred to warning signs in the relationship and said therapy and marriage counseling had been encouraged, The Detroit News reported.
One post described a confrontation after the writer learned of what was called an “emotional” affair, according to the newspaper. The account said she had shoved him and framed the reaction as fear and fight-or-flight after feeling mentally overwhelmed.
The Detroit News also reported that the account discussed whether the writer felt emotionally safe with her husband. The account described safety as being able to trust that he would not respond with anger or defensiveness during difficult moments and would help her through them.
According to the newspaper, the account said the husband was trying but still struggled with defensiveness nearly five years after the alleged affair. The writer said she was happy in general, while also saying that lingering defensiveness slowed her ability to feel emotionally safe.
