Amanda Seyfried says she passed on an unnamed show because it would have required frequent sex scenes. Speaking with Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival, the actor said she is uncomfortable with that work at this point in her life.
“I passed on a show where I would have to have sex all the time because of the sex,” Seyfried said, according to Deadline. “Doesn’t matter [who it’s with] … I don’t wanna do it. I’m uncomfortable with it. I’m not into it right now.”
The show and role were not identified in the reporting. Page Six reported that the Baldwin-hosted festival panel took place Oct. 4 in East Hampton, New York.
What did Amanda Seyfried say about sex scenes?
Seyfried did not say she will permanently refuse sex scenes. She said a project could find her in “a different space” later, but added that she currently does not want to be naked with a stranger, according to Deadline and Variety.
Her remarks describe a present-day boundary, rather than a blanket rule for every future role.
Seyfried also discussed the particular oddness of acting intimacy. “Our jobs are weird,” she told Baldwin, according to Deadline. “And as I get older, it gets weirder. We have to be romantic with people that we’re not romantic with.”
She said those scenes can be enjoyable at times and uncomfortable at others. Earlier in her career, she said, kissing scenes had felt easier and were “a non-thing.”
The actor connected her perspective in part to parenthood, saying her children are paying attention to what she does. Variety reported that Seyfried also spoke about trying to set firmer boundaries both on screen and in public.
In a previous interview with Porter magazine, reported by Variety, Seyfried said she wished intimacy coordinators had been available when she was a teenage actor. She said she had accepted situations that made her uncomfortable because she worried about keeping her job.
For the unnamed show discussed at the festival, however, Seyfried’s answer was clear: its expected level of sexual content was not something she wanted to take on now.
