The Avengers: Doomsday trailer made its first big splash at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige surprised Hall H with footage shown only inside the convention center, Variety reported.

The footage puts Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, at the center of the coming Marvel pile-up. Variety reported that the trailer opens with Doom seated on a throne as Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, describes him in narration as a damaged man.

Storm says in the footage that Victor “was always the smartest guy in the room,” according to Variety. She also says he “used to be different,” that everything he loved was taken from him and that he is “broken as a person.”

The trailer then cuts through a fast run of Marvel faces, including Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Loki, Cyclops and Magneto, Variety reported. A ruined city also appears before Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards asks whether Victor caused the destruction.

Doom gets his own ominous line in the footage, telling the heroes, “All of you have lived stolen lives,” according to Variety. The trailer then shows Thor confronting Doom, only for Victor to catch Thor’s hammer, toss it away, shove him and raise an army of Sentinels from the ground.

When does Avengers: Doomsday come out?

Avengers: Doomsday is set to open on Dec. 18, Variety reported. The film is being positioned as a major crossover bringing together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts and other Marvel characters.

Marvel began the countdown last December with four teaser trailers, according to Variety. Those teasers featured Chris Evans returning as Captain America, now with a child; Chris Hemsworth’s Thor alongside his daughter Love; the Fantastic Four meeting Black Panther and the Wakandans; and the MCU arrival of Fox’s earlier X-Men team.

Who is in the Avengers: Doomsday cast?

Downey leads the film as Doctor Doom, shifting from his long-running Marvel role as Tony Stark to the franchise’s new villain. Variety reported that Evans, Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie and Simu Liu are among the Avengers actors in the cast.

The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts lineups are also part of the team-up, according to Variety. That group includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.

The X-Men side is getting a major crossover moment too. Variety reported that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Channing Tatum are among the Fox-era Marvel stars returning for Doomsday.

For fans outside Hall H, the footage remains out of reach for now. Marvel has not made the Comic-Con trailer publicly available, according to Variety’s report on the exclusive presentation.
