The Below Netflix trailer has arrived, and Josh Hartnett is heading into dangerous waters as Calvin Penney, a fisherman in a Newfoundland town threatened by an unidentified sea creature.
Netflix released the teaser Tuesday, introducing a six-part limited drama built around a coastal community, a family under pressure and a mystery hiding beneath the surface.
Hartnett plays Calvin, described by Deadline as a warm but hard-headed small-town fisherman still carrying the weight of his father’s unexplained death decades earlier. That old wound becomes part of a new crisis when something in the sea starts menacing his hometown.
Calvin’s fight is not only with the creature. The trailer’s setup puts him in the middle of a rattled community he is trying to keep together while also protecting his family, including his son Wade, played by Charlie Heaton.
What is Below on Netflix about?
Below follows Calvin Penney as he tries to defend his Newfoundland hometown from a mysterious sea creature while confronting long-buried secrets tied to the island and his own family. The story pairs local folklore and suspense with a community drama about family, change and survival, according to Deadline.
Mackenzie Davis appears as Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher who joins Calvin as the danger grows. Together, the pair push to face the creature and uncover what the island has been hiding before the threat overwhelms the town.
The cast also includes Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Kaleb Horn as Noah, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney and Willow Kean as Ruth Penney. Heaton’s role as Wade Penney places him at the center of Calvin’s effort to keep his family safe.
The series was created by Jesse McKeown. Deadline reports that the limited series blends several tones and genres, including mythology rooted in the local setting, suspense and humor.
Behind the camera, the executive producers include Jessica Rhoades through Pacesetter, Chris Hatcher, Josh Hartnett, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall.
