Azeroth is getting character sheets. Wizards of the Coast announced at Gen Con 2026 that a D&D World of Warcraft tabletop roleplaying game will launch Nov. 17, with a Star Wars-themed Dungeons & Dragons set planned for 2027.
The World of Warcraft release, developed with Blizzard Entertainment, is the first entry in a new Dungeons & Dragons line called Universes Beyond. Wizards said the line will bring outside franchises into D&D, following the model used by Magic: The Gathering, another Wizards of the Coast brand.
According to Wizards, the World of Warcraft expansion will let D&D players build versions of their existing Warcraft characters or create new ones, then play through Azeroth locations, dungeons and enemies drawn from more than two decades of World of Warcraft history.
What is D&D Universes Beyond?
Universes Beyond is a Dungeons & Dragons product line built around properties that do not originate inside D&D. Wizards described it as a D&D counterpart to Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond collections, which use outside intellectual property in that card game.
The World of Warcraft project puts Blizzard’s long-running online fantasy franchise inside D&D’s tabletop rules, giving players a new way to stage adventures in Azeroth. Wizards also announced an Icecrown Citadel Map Pack tied to the release.
That map pack will include poster maps and tokens, Wizards said. The materials can be used with a digital adventure designed to move players up four levels.
Blizzard executive Holly Longdale, executive producer and vice president of World of Warcraft, said in the announcement that World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons share a focus on giving players a setting and letting them shape their own stories. She said Azeroth can mean different things to different players, depending on the heroes they play, the friends they meet and the choices they make.
The Star Wars D&D product will follow in 2027, according to Wizards. The company did not provide further details in the Gen Con announcement about its format, release date or content.
What else did Dungeons & Dragons announce at Gen Con?
Wizards also unveiled D&D Icons, a creative program that will put D&D creators on established settings, including Dragonlance. Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Luke Gygax and R.A. Salvatore are among the names attached to the initiative, according to Wizards.
The company also said the Dark Sun setting is returning. Other announcements included a new mobile experience for D&D Beyond and a partnership program intended to support tabletop roleplaying game campaign settings.
Wizards added that Theo Solomon will join Campaign 3 of Dungeon Masters, the D&D actual play series on YouTube.
