J.D. and Usha Vance welcome son Alec in rare VP birth

Vice President J.D. Vance and second lady Usha Vance have a new baby at home: a son named Alec Neel Vance, the couple announced Sunday.

The Vances said Alec was born earlier that morning and that both Usha and the baby are healthy. They also said their three older children are excited to meet their new brother.

Alec is the couple’s fourth child. He joins Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4, making the vice presidential residence at the Naval Observatory a busier place.

A rare birth for a sitting vice president

TMZ reported that Alec’s arrival is believed to be the first birth of a child to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years.

According to the report, the last such birth was Schuyler Colfax III, born in 1870 while his father was serving as vice president.

The milestone adds a historical footnote to a family announcement that already landed in a very public setting. Vance is serving as vice president while Usha Vance holds the role of second lady.

The family thanks medical teams

J.D. and Usha Vance thanked the doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, as well as the White House medical team, for caring for their family.

Usha Vance announced her pregnancy in January, according to TMZ. Later in the pregnancy, she drew attention for wearing an $8.75 maternity dress from Old Navy.

TMZ reported that J.D. Vance joked at the time that his wife’s bargain find made her a candidate for the country’s next budget director.

Vance has publicly pushed for more babies

The birth also comes after J.D. Vance made family growth a visible part of his public message.

At the 2025 March for Life rally, Vance said, “I want more babies in the United States of America,” according to TMZ.

With Alec’s arrival, the Vances are now a family of six, with four children ranging from newborn to 9 years old.
