Sony has released the Jumanji: Open World trailer, giving the first look at Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan back in the game for the third and final movie in the rebooted adventure-comedy series, according to Variety.

The new film follows 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level, the two modern entries that turned the old board-game chaos into a video-game body-swap setup. Variety reported that those two movies brought in more than $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

The rebooted films reworked the idea from the 1995 Jumanji, which starred Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst. In the newer version, teenagers are pulled into a game world, where their avatars are played by Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan.

Who is in Jumanji: Open World?

The main foursome is returning: Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan. Variety also reported a loaded returning ensemble that includes Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris and Rhys Darby.

Two new names are joining the cast this time: Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes, according to Variety.

The trailer signals that the series is sticking with the ingredients that powered the last two films: action set pieces, comedy and the franchise’s avatar-switching premise. Sony has not detailed a full plot in the material reported by Variety.

When does Jumanji: Open World come out?

Jumanji: Open World had been set for a Dec. 11 release, but Variety reported that it has moved to Christmas. The shift puts the film just after two major Dec. 18 releases: Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday.

That crowded holiday stretch has already picked up a fan nickname, “Dunesday,” Variety reported, because of the Dune and Avengers collision. Jumanji will now roll into theaters in the same season, giving Sony’s franchise a Christmas launch instead of the earlier December date.

Who is making the new Jumanji movie?

Jake Kasdan, who directed both Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level, is back behind the camera. Variety reported that Kasdan co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

The producer lineup includes Matt Tolmach, Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Kasdan, according to Variety.

The trailer marks the public first look at the latest entry in a series that has stretched from a 1990s family fantasy into a modern action-comedy franchise. With the core cast back, the release date moved, and the Christmas movie crush taking shape, Jumanji: Open World is now set to be one of Sony’s big holiday swings.
