Kim Kardashian is mourning the death of her grandmother Mary Jo “MJ” Campbell, who died at 91, according to TMZ.
Kardashian shared a long tribute to Campbell soon after Kris Jenner announced that her mother had died, TMZ reported. The post included a collection of photos of Kardashian with her grandmother and a message that framed Campbell as one of the central figures in her life.
“My sweet Grandma MJ, my best friend, my gossip buddy, my forever twin...” Kardashian wrote, according to TMZ.
In the tribute, Kardashian credited Campbell with helping shape the family’s values and work ethic. She wrote that her grandmother taught the family “the importance of family” and said those lessons would stay with them, TMZ reported.
Kardashian also described Campbell as an example of a working woman. “You were the woman who showed me what it meant to be a hardworking businesswoman,” she wrote, according to TMZ.
A familiar face to Kardashian viewers
Campbell, widely known in the family as MJ, was Kris Jenner’s mother and a recurring presence in the Kardashian family’s reality TV world.
TMZ reported that viewers came to know Campbell through appearances on the family’s shows, where she was seen with her daughter, grandchildren and wider family. The outlet described her as a fan favorite, citing her humor, warmth and close relationships with her granddaughters.
Those granddaughters include Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner, along with the rest of the family, according to TMZ.
Campbell’s appearances gave fans a look at the family’s older generation, placing her alongside Kris Jenner as part of the family story that played out for years on television.
Kim’s message to her late father
Kardashian ended her tribute with a personal note connecting Campbell’s death to another major loss in the family.
According to TMZ, Kardashian asked her grandmother to give her late father, Robert Kardashian, “a hug for me.” Robert Kardashian, a well-known attorney and the father of Kim, Kourtney, Khloé and Rob Kardashian, died in 2003.
No cause of death for Campbell was given in TMZ’s report. The outlet said Jenner announced her mother’s death before Kardashian posted her own remembrance.
Campbell was 91.
