Laura Marcus brings F**k Ups to Channel 4 as her first comedy there

Laura Marcus’ F**k Ups is heading to Channel 4, with the Assassin’s Creed actor creating and starring in the comedy short-form pilot, Deadline reports.
The project is a Channel 4 Blap, the broadcaster’s format for new comedy ideas that can serve as a step toward a longer series. For Marcus, it marks her first comedy project at Channel 4, according to Deadline.
Marcus plays Miracle June Jones, a teenager who has built her life around the pursuit of achievement. The story follows Miracle as she has to confront the idea that even the most controlled, hard-working person can still slip up.
Her problem gets worse when she is stuck for another year in the town she was hoping to escape. That leaves her dealing with Lillian Cheeks, her relentlessly upbeat neighbor who has declared herself Miracle’s best friend.
What is Laura Marcus’ F**k Ups about?
F**k Ups is a teen comedy about ambition, failure and being trapped somewhere you do not want to be. The central clash is between Miracle, who wants to be exceptional, and Lillian, who pushes her way into Miracle’s life with a level of enthusiasm Miracle cannot dodge.
The cast includes Molly Hewitt-Richards, known for The Virgins, Alexander Arnold from Skins, Sophie Thompson from Detectorists and Mark Benton from Smoggie Queens, Deadline reports.
Will Wightman directs the Blap. His recent work includes This Place is a Sh*thole, which featured SNL UK stars Paddy Young and Jack Shep.
The project has roots in a short film Marcus made during the pandemic with producer Daniel Sved, according to Deadline.
What is a Channel 4 Blap?
A Channel 4 Blap is a short comedy commission used to test new talent and ideas. Deadline notes that Blaps can become a route to a full series, with recent examples including Break Clause from Jess Bray and Starstruck co-writer Alice Snedden.
Marcus is also part of Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed adaptation, where Deadline previously reported she had been cast as a series regular. Her recent credits also include Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and the Netflix miniseries Death by Lightning.
In comments reported by Deadline, Marcus called F**k Ups an “adrenaline fuelled love letter to being the lamest rats in town.” She also said seeing the idea arrive in a Channel 4 format felt like “a bit of a fever dream.”
F**k Ups is produced by Bristol-based Calling the Shots Films. The producers are BAFTA-nominated Leah Draws, whose credits include Funboys, and RTS Award winner Daniel Sved, known for Spare Part.
Jeremy Routledge serves as executive producer, with Andy Brereton as commissioning editor. Lynks composed the soundtrack, according to Deadline.
