Amazon MGM Studios has an animated Mad Hatter film in development, with The Grinch director Scott Mosier set to adapt the project.

Amazon MGM Studios has a new Mad Hatter movie on the table, with Deadline reporting that the project is being planned as an animated feature from Aniventure and filmmaker Scott Mosier.
Mosier, whose animation credits include Illumination’s 2018 version of The Grinch, is set to adapt the film, according to Deadline. The studio has not disclosed story details for the project.
What is the Mad Hatter movie about?
Plot information has not been released. The character comes from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, where Alice meets the eccentric, top-hatted figure at a tea party with the March Hare and the Dormouse.
The Mad Hatter has long been one of the most recognizable characters tied to Carroll’s story, but Deadline’s report does not say whether Amazon MGM Studios’ film will follow the original book closely or use the character in a new story.
Adam Nagle is producing the film through Aniventure, Deadline reported. The negotiations were led by Aniventure Chief Content Officer Joe Della Rosa, along with Sasha Levites and Adam Macy of Frankfurt Kernit, according to the report.
Who is Scott Mosier?
Mosier has worked across live-action comedy and animation. Deadline notes that he wrote and produced the 2013 animated feature Free Birds, in which he also voiced the character Pizza Dude.
He later directed Illumination’s The Grinch, released in 2018. Deadline reports that the film earned more than half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.
Mosier also co-directed Illumination’s Minions & More 2. His voice credits listed by Deadline include Sing 2, The Secret Life of Pets 2 and The Grinch.
Outside animation, Mosier is closely associated with the Clerks films. Deadline reports that he appeared in Clerks III and across the broader Clerks franchise.
Mosier is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment and Sloss Eckhouse Dasti Haynes Loco, according to Deadline.

Aniventure was established in 2014. Deadline reports that the company has developed, produced and distributed film and television projects with studios including Amazon, Netflix, Paramount and Sony.
The animated Mad Hatter project adds another familiar literary figure to Amazon MGM Studios’ development slate, though the studio has not announced casting, a production timeline or a release date.
