Andy Reid gave the first public Chiefs update on the Mia Bieniemy shooting Monday, telling reporters in Missouri that Eric Bieniemy’s wife is stable after she was reportedly shot at the family’s Virginia home.
The Kansas City Chiefs head coach addressed the incident after practice at training camp, where he opened with a message of support for his longtime assistant and his family.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said, according to TMZ Sports video of the press conference. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them. I can't get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He's got a great support group here, as does his family.”
Reid then offered the update everyone around the team had been waiting for: “Mia is stable, which is a plus.”
What happened in the Mia Bieniemy shooting?
TMZ Sports reported that the shooting took place shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bieniemy family home in Virginia. Mia Bieniemy, 57, was reportedly struck at least twice, with injuries to her torso and arm.
The report said the couple’s youngest son, 27-year-old Elijah Bieniemy, was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. TMZ Sports reported that he is being held without bond at Loudoun County Jail.
No public comment from Elijah Bieniemy was reported in the initial account. The specific charges were not detailed in the report.
Where is Eric Bieniemy now?
Reid said Eric Bieniemy has left Chiefs training camp to be with Mia at the hospital. The coach said there is no timetable for Bieniemy’s return to the team.
That leaves Kansas City dealing with a family emergency involving one of its best-known staff members as camp continues in Missouri. Reid, who has won three Super Bowls as Chiefs head coach, kept the public update brief and said he could not discuss details of the case.
Eric Bieniemy has long been tied to Reid’s Kansas City staff, and Reid described the support around him as strong. “He's got a great support group here, as does his family,” Reid told reporters.
The Chiefs have not announced a return date for Bieniemy, according to Reid’s Monday comments. For now, the team’s public focus is on Mia Bieniemy’s condition and the family’s immediate needs after the shooting.
