Oliver Darcy’s media newsletter Status is taking its next swing off-screen: a full-day New York event built around the business, pressure points and future of media.
The Status Summit is set for Wednesday, Sept. 9, at The Times Center in New York City, according to Variety. The event is expected to bring together media executives, journalists, creators and other decision-makers for a day of interviews, panels and networking.
Darcy, the journalist and entrepreneur who launched Status in 2024, told Variety by text that the publication was designed to be more than a nightly newsletter. He described its audience as a community of people invested in the media business and said an in-person event was a natural next move for readers, podcast listeners and YouTube subscribers.
He also told Variety that live journalism in front of an engaged crowd offers a chance for frank discussion about major challenges facing the industry.
Big names on the bill
Confirmed speakers include Meredith Kopit Levien, president and chief executive of The New York Times; Rebecca Kutler, president of MS NOW; David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker; and Wendy McMahon, a media adviser and former president and chief executive of CBS News and Stations.
More speakers are expected to be announced, according to Variety.
The summit will be sponsored by beehiiv, the creator platform that hosts Status and a number of other projects. Darcy and Jon Passantino, executive editor of Status, will host the all-day program.
Sessions are planned to include exclusive interviews, panel discussions, networking and conversations on the future of media, artificial intelligence disruption, political pressure and business strategy, Variety reported.
What attendees get
The day is scheduled to begin with opening remarks at 9:45 a.m. and wrap with a closing cocktail reception presented by Bilt, described by Variety as a housing rewards and neighborhood commerce platform.
Attendees are also expected to receive a light breakfast and catered lunch.
Early bird tickets are priced at $495 through July 31. Variety reported that the early price is $255 below the regular $750 admission. A limited number of sponsorship and partnership slots remain available.
Status widens its business
The summit adds another format to a company that has already moved beyond the inbox. In July 2025, Darcy and his team launched the podcast Power Lines, which Variety said has drawn more than 100,000 subscribers on YouTube.
Darcy told Variety that watching the media business has reinforced the need to build more than one revenue stream. He said Status does not want to rely on a single platform or medium and wants to distribute its journalism both online and in person.
The move comes as more media companies, including legacy brands and newer operations, are using live events to support their businesses. Variety noted that Versant Media’s MS NOW announced a Texas conference scheduled for Sept. 26, with anchors and correspondents appearing as part of its growing live-event slate.
