Prime Video God of War series: Dave Bautista takes over as Kratos
Prime Video’s God of War adaptation is filming two seasons, with Dave Bautista replacing Ryan Hurst and no release date set.

The Prime Video God of War series is still without a premiere date, but the live-action adaptation is moving through production with a new Kratos. Deadline reported on August 24 that Dave Bautista had closed a deal to lead the show after Ryan Hurst was injured while filming.
The project has been in the works for years. Deadline said Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television first considered a television version in March 2022, while a later round of creative changes was followed by casting announcements in early 2026.
When will Prime Video’s God of War series be released?
No release date had been announced as of Deadline’s August 24 report. Deadline said pre-production began late in 2025 and that the plan was to shoot two seasons back to back. Nerdist also reported that Prime Video gave the show a two-season order.
That means viewers have a substantial cast list and a production plan, but no confirmed premiere window, trailer or episode count yet.
What story will God of War tell?
The series is set to begin with the story of the 2018 God of War game, according to Nerdist. Its published logline follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.
The journey is also a father-and-son story: the logline says Kratos tries to make Atreus a better god, while Atreus pushes his father to become a better human. In the game’s Norse-era setting, the pair cross paths with figures including Odin, Thor, Baldur and Heimdall.
Why was Kratos recast?
Hurst was initially cast as Kratos. But Deadline reported that he tore a bicep during a stunt in June 2026, prompting Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM to recast the central role.
Bautista then completed his deal in late August, Deadline reported. The actor will play the Spartan warrior and god at the center of the adaptation.

- Callum Vinson plays Atreus, Kratos’ young son.
- Teresa Palmer plays Sif, also identified as Phoebe.
- Max Parker plays Heimdall.
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays Thor.
- Mandy Patinkin plays Odin.
- Ed Skrein plays Baldur.
- Louis Cunningham plays Modi.
- Ben Chapple has a recurring role as Magni.
Behind the camera, Nerdist reported that Ronald D. Moore became showrunner after Rafe Judkins was no longer serving in that job. Frederick E.O. Toye was reported to be directing the first two episodes.
For now, the key question is timing. The two-season shoot remains the reported plan, while Prime Video has yet to say when Kratos and Atreus will make their streaming debut.
