Ryan Murphy says a Glee reboot could be worth revisiting

Ryan Murphy is hearing the choir warm up again. The co-creator of Glee told People that a Ryan Murphy Glee reboot is not off the table, saying renewed attention from younger viewers has made him wonder whether the Fox musical series should return in some form.
Murphy discussed the idea during the premiere of his new FX series The Shards, according to Deadline, which reported his comments from the People interview. He said the show has “come back around” and that many young people are now watching it.
Murphy told People his affection for the series is part of why he is open to thinking about it again. He said his “nostalgia and love” for Glee makes him think viewers might want “a new incarnation” of the show “in some capacity.”
Will there be a Glee reboot?
No reboot has been announced, and Murphy did not describe a plan, cast, network, streaming home, or timetable. His comments amount to interest in revisiting the property, not confirmation that a new Glee project is in development.
That leaves the door open just enough for fans to start humming. Murphy told People he loves the show and what it became, as well as what it meant to viewers.
What was Glee about?
Glee was a jukebox musical comedy-drama set at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. The series followed New Directions, the school’s glee club, as its members dealt with coming-of-age issues including sexuality, family and race, according to Deadline.
Murphy created the series with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. It premiered on Fox in May 2009 and ended in March 2015 after more than 120 episodes across six seasons.
The cast was led by Matthew Morrison as choir teacher Will Schuester. Deadline listed Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Naya Rivera, Jayma Mays and Jane Lynch among the performers who appeared on the series.
How big did Glee get?
The series grew beyond its Fox run. After the show’s success, Glee: The Concert Movie was released in theaters, featuring the cast during a North American tour.
A reality competition, The Glee Project, also launched in 2011 and ran for two seasons. Deadline reported that winners of the competition earned guest-starring roles on Glee.
Murphy’s latest remarks do not answer what a new version would look like, whether original cast members would be involved, or whether it would return to McKinley High. For now, the news is simpler: the person who helped build Glee is publicly saying the show’s second life with young viewers has him thinking about another round.
