Ryan Murphy will receive the Norman Lear Award at Variety’s Showrunners Breakfast on Aug. 14, the publication announced, putting one of television’s most prolific creators at the center of its annual gathering of top TV writers and producers.
The award presentation will be part of a program built around two spotlight conversations with a selected group of this year’s Emmy-nominated showrunners. Variety said the participants in those conversations will be announced soon.
Murphy is being recognized for a career that Variety said reflects Norman Lear’s legacy through creativity, ambitious storytelling and social impact. The honor is formally called the Norman Lear Creative Conscious Award.
What is the Norman Lear Award?
The Norman Lear Award is Variety’s honor for television creatives whose work is seen as carrying forward Lear’s influence on storytelling and culture. Lear, the television producer and writer whose work shaped generations of TV comedy and social commentary, was the first person recognized with the earlier Variety Creative Conscience Award in 2019.
Variety later renamed the honor for Lear. The award is now in its third annual presentation under that name, according to the publication.
Past recipients include Chuck Lorre and David E. Kelley, placing Murphy in a short line of veteran television creators singled out by Variety for work that has had both industry reach and cultural bite.
Emily Longeretta, Variety’s features director, said Lear’s influence remains visible through both his own programs and the writers and showrunners who followed him. She said Murphy, like Lear, has taken on social issues in his storytelling and has spent more than 20 years breaking barriers on television.
Longeretta also described Murphy as a creative force across several genres and said Variety was pleased to present him with the honor.
Who will be at the Showrunners Breakfast?
The guest list will be made up of an exclusive group of showrunners included on Variety’s 2026 Showrunners Impact List, which is being released in connection with the event.
Donna Pennestri, Variety’s associate publisher, said the breakfast is designed as a celebration of television storytelling among peers whose work continues to shape the medium and influence culture.
The event’s format will pair the award presentation with the two spotlight talks, giving the room a mix of career recognition and current-season Emmy conversation. Variety has not yet named the showrunners taking part in those discussions.
Murphy’s award adds a marquee name to the breakfast ahead of Emmy season attention, while tying the event to Lear’s continuing place as a reference point for television that reaches beyond entertainment into social impact.
