Influencer Shamar McCoy says his Shamar McCoy battery arrest did not spare him from recognition behind bars. McCoy told TMZ that other inmates knew who he was soon after he was jailed and asked why he had been locked up.
In the same interview, McCoy denied wrongdoing in the misdemeanor battery case and said he intends to plead not guilty. He also claimed the man accusing him was invoking his name for money and attention, an allegation McCoy made without evidence presented in the available reporting.
What led to Shamar McCoy's battery arrest?
The warrant stems from a reported confrontation on Nov. 25, 2024, at an apartment on Delowe Drive in southwest Atlanta, according to FOX 5 Atlanta's account of an Atlanta Police incident report.
That report says the complainant and a witness told police that the complainant had argued by phone with McCoy's boyfriend, Alexander Green. They said McCoy and Green later came to the apartment and allegedly assaulted the complainant.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the complainant reported being punched, knocked to the ground and kicked. TMZ, also citing police information, reported that a witness alleged McCoy kicked the complainant in the head. Those accounts describe allegations in a warrant and have not been established as a conviction.
McCoy told TMZ he had not known the complainant, Quentin McDowell, before the reported incident and denied being involved in any earlier incident with him.
How police found the outstanding warrant
FOX 5 Atlanta reported that an officer investigating a hit-and-run at 610 Spring Street in Midtown found McCoy riding in the victim's vehicle as a passenger. After adding McCoy's name to the crash report, the officer discovered the outstanding battery warrant, the station reported, citing Atlanta Police Department information and body-camera footage.
McCoy complied with officers and was taken into custody without incident, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. He was evaluated at Grady Hospital before being booked into Fulton County Jail, according to the station.
Fulton County Jail records showed McCoy was granted a $2,000 surety bond, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. TMZ separately reported that he was released hours after his arrest on a $2,000 bond.
The available reports differ on whether the traffic stop or arrest occurred Sunday or Monday, so the precise arrest date is unclear. They also do not establish whether McCoy later posted bond, when he may appear in court, or the eventual outcome of the case.
