Sony Pictures has picked up the short story Renegades from screenwriter Will Simmons and is turning it into a feature, Deadline reported.
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the filmmaking pair behind Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, are attached to direct, according to the report. Simmons is set to write the screenplay based on his own story.
Details on the plot are being kept quiet for now. Deadline described the project as an action-thriller.
Hutch Parker is lined up to produce through his deal at Sony, the report said. Parker’s producing credits include work tied to the Venom and X-Men franchises.
A busy run for Simmons
Simmons has been building a slate of studio genre projects, according to Deadline. He previously adapted Robert Kirkman’s sci-fi/action graphic novel Hardcore for Universal, with Skybound producing and Adam Wingard directing.
His original feature spec Undo was sold to New Line in a preemptive deal, the report said. Beau Flynn is producing that project, with Joost & Schulman attached to direct.
Simmons also has another short story set up at Sony: the action-adventure project Caliber, which Deadline reported has Escape Artists producing and Simmons slated to adapt.
His other credits named in the report include a Sleepy Hollow remake for Paramount and a reboot of Internal Affairs for Paramount. Deadline also reported that Simmons wrote They Like the Dark, which is expected to begin production this fall with Liam Hemsworth starring and Scott Free producing.
Simmons is represented by CAA and Untitled Entertainment, according to Deadline.
Goldstein and Daley stay in the studio lane
Goldstein and Daley are also developing the next Star Trek film at Paramount, Deadline reported. The pair are set to direct and produce that film from a script they wrote.
Their recent project Mayday, described by Deadline as a Cold War-era buddy action comedy, stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. The film streams on Apple TV beginning September 4, according to the report.
The duo’s shared credits include Vacation, Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Deadline reported that they are represented by WME, Fourth Wall Management and Hansen Jacobson.
With Renegades, Sony is adding another action-focused literary property to its pipeline, this time with the story’s author handling the script and a directing team already known for studio comedy and adventure projects.
