Sweet Magnolias has been canceled after five seasons on Netflix, and creator Sheryl J. Anderson has sent viewers of the fictional town of Serenity a warm farewell.
Anderson, who also served as showrunner, reflected on the end of the romantic drama in an Instagram post after the news, according to Variety. “Living in Serenity for five seasons has been a privilege and a blessing,” she wrote.
She thanked the writers, cast, crew, executives and producers behind the series, saying the people she met through the show had changed her life. Anderson also singled out the audience for its commitment to the characters.
“Though our journey has sadly come to an end, I hope Serenity will always have a place in your heart. Keep pouring it out!” Anderson wrote.
Why was Sweet Magnolias canceled after season 5?
Netflix will not continue Sweet Magnolias beyond its five streaming seasons, Variety and Entertainment Weekly reported. No reason for the decision was included in the reports.
The series debuted on Netflix in May 2020 and was adapted from Sherryl Woods’ book series. It follows lifelong friends Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen as they manage relationships, family and careers in Serenity, South Carolina.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher played Maddie, with Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue and Heather Headley as Helen. Netflix described the series as a comfort drama, according to Variety.

Anderson and Garcia Swisher are set to reunite for Netflix’s new drama Ladies of the House, Variety reported. The project centers on a winery owner’s widow and two adult daughters, who must face strains within their family and the business after his unexpected death.
For now, all five seasons of Sweet Magnolias remain available on Netflix. The show’s official Instagram account also told viewers that the series was complete and that Serenity would remain there for fans when they wanted to return, Us Magazine reported.
