Terrence Howard, Guillermo Iván and Kate Bosworth are headed into the courtroom for Broken Ones, a new legal thriller from writer-director Timothy Gagliardo, Variety reported.

The film is inspired by the memoir of producer and co-writer Alejandro Zavala. According to an official description cited by Variety, the story draws on Zavala’s experiences with the criminal justice system and the legal profession, while taking on themes of redemption, justice, family and life-shaping choices.

Iván leads the cast as Joseph Santiago, described by Variety as a former felon who begins digging into a car accident for a victim’s family and uncovers a corporate cover-up.

Howard plays Benjamin Drake, an attorney with a strong reputation who is trying to bring justice to wealthy elites. Bosworth plays Kathleen Sloane, a corporate defense lawyer whose ethics come under pressure when her clients ask for something extreme, according to the film’s description.

Howard said in a statement that the film’s moral questions drew him in. “What are we doing all of this for? At the end of the day, are we turning stone into bread to feed ourselves or are we turning stone into bread to feed others? This film explores those questions in a deeply human way. Benjamin Drake’s journey became a personal one for me, even though the story reaches far beyond my own perspective.”

A second movie, Real Ones, is also being developed as a companion film. Variety reported that it, too, is based on Zavala’s memoir.

Who is behind the film

Broken Ones is produced by Zavala, Justin Nesbitt, Micah Brandt for UFO Pictures and Michael Pizzimenti for Al Bravo Films.

The executive producers are Zavala, Drake of Drake Law Firm, Paul Hughes, Vanessa Hughes and David Block of Block and Company Inc., according to Variety.

Howard’s credits include Iron Man and Hustle & Flow, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor. He also starred in Fox’s Emmy-nominated drama Empire from 2015 to 2020. His recent film work includes Alicia in Wonderland, Miami Nights and BFFs.

Bosworth played Lois Lane in 2006’s Superman Returns and recently appeared in the psychological thriller The Immaculate Room. Iván is set to appear in the upcoming films Exorcist Archives and As Good as Dead 2.

Variety reported that a release date and additional casting for Broken Ones will be announced later.
