Prime Video has set The Traitors India season 2 for a global Aug. 13 premiere, Variety reports, putting Karan Johar back in charge of a celebrity game built on suspicion, strategy and social sabotage.
New episodes of the Indian adaptation will stream every Thursday, according to Prime Video. The new season will feature 21 celebrities from different fields competing in the reality format, where contestants must handle alliances, deception and betrayal to stay in the game.
The series is produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital content arm of Dharma Productions, with All3Media International. All3Media oversees the Indian version of the format, which was created by IDTV and has won BAFTA and Emmy recognition internationally.
When does The Traitors India season 2 premiere?
The Traitors India season 2 premieres Aug. 13 on Prime Video worldwide. After the launch, episodes will arrive weekly on Thursdays.
Karan Johar returns as host after fronting the first Indian season. Prime Video India is positioning the show as one of its major reality franchises, with Nikhil Madhok, director and head of originals at Prime Video India, saying the first season performed beyond the company’s expectations.
“The response to the first season of ‘The Traitors’ exceeded all expectations,” Madhok said in a statement reported by Variety, adding that the show became “a cultural moment.” He described the franchise as one of Prime Video India’s defining reality titles and pointed to its mix of gameplay, psychological strategy and entertainment.
Madhok also said the second season brings a new group of contestants and sharper gameplay. Prime Video has not announced the celebrity lineup in the details reported by Variety.
What is The Traitors?
The Traitors is a reality competition format in which players must decide whom to trust while trying to identify hidden opponents working against the group. The tension comes from social strategy: contestants can win by reading the room, misleading rivals or surviving suspicion.
Sabrina Duguet, executive vice president for APAC at All3Media International, said the Indian adaptation connected strongly with viewers in its debut season and that the company was pleased to see it return.
Dharmatic Entertainment said in a statement that the first season sparked broad viewer interest across India and that the second run is intended to preserve the format’s unpredictable, psychological feel.
The wider Traitors brand has traveled fast. According to Variety, the format has been adapted in more than 40 territories worldwide. All3Media International has licensed local versions in more than 30 territories, while tape sales have taken episodes to more than 50 others.
Dharmatic Entertainment was formed in 2018 and has produced more than 25 titles, including Call Me Bae and Love Storiyaan. Variety reports that The Traitors sits in the company’s upcoming slate alongside a global game show format also hosted by Johar.
Prime Video’s India originals lineup also includes Mirzapur, The Family Man, Panchayat, Paatal Lok and Rise & Fall, among other titles.
