Wildcards theatrical tour pairs Wes Miller thriller with audience talks

BLacklight and Dark Star Pictures are turning the Wildcards theatrical tour into more than a sit-and-watch movie night, with select screenings of Wes Miller’s new courtroom thriller set to include moderated conversations after the credits roll.
Variety reports that the companies have joined forces for a nationwide theatrical release beginning Aug. 27. The plan is to pair the film with in-person discussions featuring members of the cast and creative team, and in some cities, local community leaders, artists and cultural figures.
The setup gives Wildcards a roadshow feel: movie first, conversation right after. Organizers are framing each stop as a shared event built around the story’s themes and the audience response in the room.
What is Wildcards about?
Wildcards follows the trial of Theodore Sterling, a wealthy young man accused of sexually assaulting a young Black woman. The drama plays out inside the jury room and the courtroom, where people from different walks of life argue over the evidence.
The legal fight centers on state prosecutor James Jones and defense attorney Greg Sims, whose opposing strategies sharpen as the case heats up. The trial shifts when a surprise witness arrives claiming to know what happened that night, while her tie to the accused raises questions about bias, trust and justice.
Miller wrote and directed the film. His previous credits include Black Heat and Call Her King.

Miller said in a statement that he was eager for audiences to see the cast’s performances, describing the film as part of his goal to make genre entertainment with cultural weight.
“For me, this theatrical tour is about taking that directly to our communities, city-by-city, and creating the kind of theatrical experience that reminds people why cinema matters,” Miller said.
Why are BLacklight and Dark Star adding post-screening talks?
The companies are using the release to make the theatrical run feel more interactive. Instead of ending the night when the film ends, the screenings are designed to bring audiences into a wider discussion about the story and its issues.
Producer Andrew van den Houten said BLacklight is continuing its distribution partnership with Dark Star Pictures through the release. He said bringing Miller, Leon and other guests to national event screenings lets the companies offer a celebratory cinema experience while building ties with their audience.
The release date is set for Aug. 27. The discussions will take place in select markets as part of the nationwide theatrical rollout.
