Willie Nelson data centers concerns spilled into public view Tuesday as the country icon posted an open letter urging Americans to push back against new facilities near rural communities, including his hometown of Abbott, Texas.

Nelson shared the letter on social media on July 28, saying Abbott and other towns should resist what he described as data centers moving onto local land. His message framed the issue as a fight over farmland, water, light pollution and the future of small-town life.

“The last thing we need is a loud, water thieving, light polluting, data center anywhere near our town,” Nelson wrote, adding that he did not want to see such projects near other communities either.

Nelson said rural America draws its strength from people, open land, local businesses and a close tie to the land, rather than from large industrial sites. In the letter, he argued that farmland and family farmers’ livelihoods should be protected from development he says harms the areas around it.

He also linked the issue to control over basic resources, writing: “Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses.” Nelson urged people not to “give up control” over resources in the United States, especially in Abbott.

Data centers are large facilities tied to digital infrastructure, and the debate around them has grown as communities weigh economic development against demands on power, water and land. Variety reported that the projects have drawn opposition in recent years over environmental concerns, effects on local communities and political questions.

Nelson’s letter singled out noise, water use and light pollution, all concerns that have become familiar flashpoints in fights over proposed data center projects. His post did not name a specific developer or project.

What has Texas said about data center development?

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott has also addressed the issue. Variety reported that Abbott recently called for a ban on data center development in rural neighborhoods.

The governor had earlier proposed rules that would require data centers to add new power generation to the grid and reuse their own water, among other guidelines, according to Variety.

Nelson’s comments carry extra weight because of his long history with rural and agricultural causes. Variety reported that he has helped raise more than $70 million through Farm Aid for rural farmers.

The singer has also raised millions more for disaster relief and veterans, according to Variety. He supports Feeding America and the American Red Cross, among other charitable efforts.

Nelson, who grew up in Abbott, has often tied his public work to rural communities and farming. His latest letter casts the spread of data centers as another fight over who gets to shape the future of those places.
