Miami No. 1 AP Top 25 is the new reality after a Week 7 that sent several contenders tumbling. The unbeaten Hurricanes rose from third to first in the Week 8 rankings, receiving 40 first-place votes and 1,697 points, CBS Sports reported.
Miami is 6-0 and is atop the AP poll for the first time since 2002, according to CBS Sports. The move followed a double-overtime win over Florida State, the network's video report said.
The shuffle came after five of the prior top seven teams lost in Week 7, Yahoo Sports reported. Georgia, which had been No. 1, lost at home to unranked Auburn and dropped four spots to No. 5. Notre Dame lost to BYU and fell from second to fourth.
Why did Miami move to No. 1 in the AP Top 25?
Miami climbed as losses hit teams above it. BYU made the biggest leap near the summit, jumping six places from No. 8 to No. 2 after beating Notre Dame.
Ohio State moved up one place to third. Indiana, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, UCLA and Utah round out the top 10, in that order.
- 1. Miami, 6-0
- 2. BYU, 6-0
- 3. Ohio State, 6-1
- 4. Notre Dame, 6-1
- 5. Georgia, 6-1
- 6. Indiana, 6-1
- 7. Ole Miss, 5-1
- 8. Texas Tech, 6-0
- 9. UCLA, 6-0
- 10. Utah, 6-0
Further down the list, Texas fell 12 positions from No. 7 to No. 19 after losing at home to unranked Florida, Yahoo Sports reported. Florida returned to the rankings at No. 20. Arizona, which had been idle, made its AP poll debut at No. 25, according to a CBS Sports video report.
Alabama slid from sixth to 13th after its loss to Tennessee. Missouri dropped nine places to No. 22 following a 31-3 defeat at Ole Miss, Yahoo Sports reported.
The rankings placed Tennessee at No. 11, Kentucky at No. 12, Houston at No. 14, Iowa at No. 15, USC at No. 16, Wake Forest at No. 17 and LSU at No. 18. Boise State, SMU and Northwestern fill Nos. 21, 23 and 24.
