How monthly commute cost is calculated
Monthly miles equal round-trip distance multiplied by commute days. Fuel gallons equal miles divided by MPG, and fuel cost equals gallons multiplied by price. The driving total adds mileage-based maintenance, daily parking, and daily tolls. The annual result multiplies that monthly pattern by twelve.
Choosing a maintenance allowance
A per-mile allowance can represent oil, tires, brakes, routine service, and mileage-related repairs. Your real number depends on the vehicle and its age. This field deliberately does not assume a universal rate. Review actual spending over a longer period and divide it by miles driven for a personalized estimate.
Costs the calculator does not include
Depreciation can be a major cost, especially for a newer vehicle or high annual mileage. Insurance, registration, financing, unexpected repairs, and the value of commuting time are also excluded because they are not always incremental to a specific commute. Add them separately when comparing a job, move, or vehicle purchase.
Comparing driving and transit
The transit comparison multiplies the entered round-trip fare by commuting days. Include passes, employer subsidies, transfers, and station parking in the number you enter. A negative “driving minus transit” result means the modeled driving cost is lower; a positive result means transit costs less under these inputs. Travel time, reliability, and flexibility remain personal tradeoffs outside the dollar result.
