David Jonsson Black Panther casting revealed for Marvel’s third film

David Jonsson Black Panther news landed at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, with director Ryan Coogler telling Marvel fans that the actor will take on the mantle in the franchise’s third film, according to NBC News.
Marvel Studios said Jonsson will play T’Challa’s son in Black Panther 3, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 15, 2028. Coogler, who directed the first two films in the series, is returning for the third installment.
Jonsson appeared onstage at Marvel’s panel after Coogler introduced him, NBC News reported. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke were also pictured during the Marvel Studios presentation.
“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said onstage, according to NBC News. He added that he did not want to say too much and wanted the screen to do the talking.
Marvel Studios also posted the reveal on X, writing that Coogler introduced “the new Black Panther, David Jonsson,” and listing the film’s Dec. 15, 2028, release date.
Who is David Jonsson playing in Black Panther 3?
Jonsson is playing Prince T’Challa II, the son of T’Challa. NBC News reported that the character was introduced in the second Black Panther movie, and that the third film will show him coming of age and taking over.
The casting follows a complicated handoff for one of Marvel’s best-known roles. Chadwick Boseman played T’Challa in the first Black Panther film and died of colon cancer in 2020, after that movie had been released and while Coogler was working on the sequel, NBC News reported.
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, took on a central place in the story. Jonsson’s role as T’Challa’s son now sets up a new lead for the next chapter.
Jonsson is known for roles in Stephen King’s The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus and as Gus Sackey in the first two seasons of Industry, according to NBC News.
What else did Marvel announce at Comic-Con?
Marvel Studios also used its San Diego Comic-Con appearance to announce a new Ghost Rider film. The studio said on X that Ryan Gosling will star, with Shawn Levy directing.
NBC News reported that the Ghost Rider movie is set for release in 2028. Levy previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine.
Gosling’s longtime partner, Eva Mendes, appeared in the 2007 Ghost Rider film opposite Nicolas Cage, NBC News noted.
