Jordan Hope Mister Roy shoes is the Arizona story behind a parking-lot encounter that has grown into a friendship. Hope, 18, gave the sneakers off his feet to an older man known as Mister Roy after seeing the man's worn footwear outside a Walgreens in Maricopa, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
CBS News reported that Hope and Roy have spoken every day since. FOX 10 separately reported that the pair had been communicating, and quoted Hope saying he hoped they would become close friends.
What happened when Jordan Hope gave Mister Roy his shoes?
Hope, a recent high school graduate from Pinal County who was building a computer business, was on his way to a bank when he spotted Roy outside the Maricopa Walgreens, FOX 10 reported. Hope said Roy had been having leg problems, and he noticed the older man's shoes were falling apart.
He pulled over and handed Roy his own sneakers. The exchange was seen by bystander Yareli Madrid, who posted about it on social media, according to FOX 10.
Hope said he did not realize anyone had been watching until his grandmother sent him Madrid's post in a family group chat the following day.
How did the two stay in touch?
After they spoke, Hope learned that Roy was grieving the recent death of his wife, FOX 10 reported. Hope told the station he had offered support while also respecting Roy's effort to manage on his own unless he needed significant help.
He said he and Roy planned to have dinner and go to church together. CBS later described the two as talking daily.
Hope also started a GoFundMe for Roy. FOX 10 said the fundraiser had brought in more than $15,000 when it reported the story; the available reporting does not establish a current total.
The shoe exchange began as a brief stop outside a Walgreens. By the accounts from CBS News and FOX 10 Phoenix, it left Hope and Roy with an ongoing connection.
