Marisol “N” was arrested Monday in Mexico, days after her husband, Temoac Mayor Valentin Lavin, was shot and killed during a town hall, according to the Morelos state prosecutor’s office and local media.
Local outlets identified Marisol “N” as Lavin’s widow. Prosecutors said she was detained along with Geovany Emmanuel “N,” the chief of the municipal police, in what officials described as an anti-extortion operation.
Why was Marisol N arrested?
The Morelos state prosecutor’s office said Marisol “N” and Geovany Emmanuel “N” were arrested as part of an extortion investigation. The office did not give further details about the alleged conduct behind the arrests.
Prosecutors also did not say whether the extortion case was connected to Lavin’s killing. The office released images of both detainees with their eyes blurred, a practice commonly used in Mexico in images of suspects.
What happened to Valentin Lavin?
Lavin, the mayor of Temoac in central Mexico, was shot and killed on July 22 during a town hall meeting. He was allied with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s leftist party, according to reports.
The killing took place in Morelos, a state close to Mexico City where several drug cartels are active. Authorities have not announced, based on the information released, a link between Lavin’s death and the arrests reported Monday.
Temoac is now part of a grim national pattern. Official figures show that almost 100 mayors have been murdered in Mexico since 2006, the year drug-related violence surged in the country.
Since Sheinbaum’s government took office in October 2024, at least 14 mayors have been killed in Mexico, Uno TV reported last week. That tally adds to pressure on officials as local politicians continue to face threats in cartel-hit regions.
Recent violence has not been limited to mayors. Earlier this month, attackers shot dead the husband of a Mexican councilwoman, while the councilwoman and her daughter were also injured by gunfire as the family was reportedly heading to a school graduation.
Another high-profile case came last November, when Mayor Carlos Manzo was fatally shot in Michoacan during Day of the Dead celebrations. The killing drew wide attention in a state long affected by organized crime violence.
Sheinbaum said on July 14 that homicides in Mexico had fallen by nearly half since September 2024. She described the drop as a result of the security policies pursued by her administration since taking office.
