Plainclothes ICE agents tried to detain a man at Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas, but the encounter ended with the agents walking away and the man left with a handcuff on one wrist, CBS News reported.

According to CBS News correspondent Nicole Sganga, the agents said the man had overstayed his visa. Video of the airport encounter shows the attempted detention, CBS News reported.

The episode did not end at the gate. CBS News reported that other travelers stepped in during the confrontation, after which the ICE agents left the area. The man was not fully uncuffed when they departed, according to the report.

He was taken into custody the following day after his flight landed in L.A., CBS News reported.

What CBS News reported happened

The encounter unfolded at Harry Reid Airport, one of the country’s busiest travel hubs and the main airport serving Las Vegas. CBS News described the officers involved as ICE agents in plain clothes.

The agents attempted to detain the man based on their claim that he had remained in the country beyond the terms of his visa, according to the report. CBS News did not identify the man in its video report.

The confrontation drew in nearby travelers, CBS News reported. After those travelers intervened, the agents left without completing the detention at the airport.

The report said the man remained with a handcuff attached to one wrist after the agents walked away. CBS News did not report further details about how that cuff was later removed.

Custody came later

The attempted detention in Las Vegas was followed by an arrest the next day, according to CBS News. The man was taken into custody when his flight arrived in Los Angeles.

CBS News did not report additional details about the man’s immigration case, the flight, or the circumstances of the later custody action in L.A.

The report also did not include a public statement from the man or from the travelers who intervened. ICE’s claim about the visa overstay was reported as the agents’ stated basis for trying to detain him.
