Spain finished the night on top of the football world, lifting the 2026 World Cup after beating Argentina in the final, according to Telemundo’s Conexión Mundial coverage.
The trophy ceremony in New York/New Jersey put Rodri at the center of the celebration. Telemundo reported that Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino handed the World Cup to him after Spain’s victory, before La Roja raised the trophy.
Spain’s players received gold medals on the podium, while Argentina were awarded silver, according to the broadcast. Telemundo also reported that the win gave Spain its second star, 16 years after its previous World Cup title.
Ferran Torres delivers the decisive blow
Telemundo’s match coverage identified Ferran Torres as the player who scored the goal that won the World Cup for Spain. A related segment said Torres appeared in the 106th minute, sending the Spanish bench into celebration.
After the match, Torres told Telemundo: "Siempre hemos dependido de nosotros y hoy lo hemos demostrado." The remark came as Spain’s players and staff celebrated a final that Telemundo framed as a historic night for La Roja.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente also spoke after the triumph. In Telemundo’s coverage, he said Spain remains "un equipo todavía con mucho recorrido," pointing to a team with more ahead even after reaching the sport’s biggest prize.
Argentina falls short in the final
Argentina’s run ended with silver medals and a painful final defeat. Telemundo reported that Lionel Scaloni thanked his players after the match, saying there was "agradecimiento eterno" for the squad that reached the final.
Maxi Rodríguez, speaking in Telemundo’s coverage, said Spain were worthy winners while also praising Argentina. "España fue un justo ganador, pero hay que felicitar a Argentina," he said.
The final also had flashpoints before the trophy ceremony. Telemundo listed a red card for Enzo Fernández and a confrontation involving Lionel Messi and Marc Cucurella among its match segments. Another clip was labeled as a physical altercation involving Leandro Paredes and Eric García.
Messi’s night was also part of the post-match images. Telemundo described the Argentina star on the grass after the defeat, a scene presented as a possible closing chapter to a major story in World Cup history.
A final staged under bright lights
The event drew a major show around the match as well. Telemundo reported that Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna and BTS performed during the halftime show.
Other names featured in the final-day coverage included Zinedine Zidane, Rihanna, Andrés Iniesta, Mario Kempes, Carlos Alcaraz and Hoyeon, with Telemundo noting that Iniesta, Kempes, Alcaraz and Hoyeon presented the World Cup before kickoff.
