Unai Simón ended Spain’s World Cup night with the trophy in his hands and a record on his résumé.
Telemundo reported that Spain’s starting goalkeeper went through seven matches without conceding a goal at the FIFA World Cup 2026, setting a new mark in the tournament. The run finished with Spain crowned champion.
In a post-match video published by Telemundo on July 19, Simón spoke after the final and showed his emotion at the achievement. According to Telemundo’s headline for the interview, the goalkeeper said there is “nothing bigger than winning a World Cup.”
The title was Spain’s second World Cup star, according to Telemundo’s coverage. Related Telemundo segments described Spain’s triumph as coming after a final against Argentina in New York, with the team lifting the trophy on what the network called a memorable night.
A keeper’s tournament
Telemundo’s report put Simón at the center of Spain’s run, noting the seven clean sheets as the standout individual milestone. For a goalkeeper, that is the cleanest possible way to leave a World Cup: no goals allowed in seven matches and a winner’s medal at the end.
The network said Simón “could not hide his happiness” after the final. It did not publish a full written transcript of his remarks with the video listing, but the clip was presented as an eight-minute, 10-second interview from Spain’s post-match celebrations.
Spain’s defense was only one part of the night shown across Telemundo’s World Cup programming. Other clips on the network’s page featured Mikel Oyarzabal reacting to the victory, Ferran Torres and coach Luis de la Fuente dedicating the title to Spain, and De la Fuente calling it an honor to coach the players.
Spain’s second star
Telemundo framed the win as Spain’s second world championship, arriving 16 years after its previous World Cup title. One of the network’s related videos showed Spain receiving its second star, while another followed the team’s coronation after beating Argentina in New York.
Argentina’s side of the night also appeared in Telemundo’s coverage. The network listed a segment on Lionel Scaloni’s tears after the final and another in which former Argentina player Maxi Rodríguez said, according to the clip title, that Spain was a fair winner while Argentina also deserved congratulations.
Spanish former player Guti also weighed in for Telemundo’s post-final analysis. The network titled that segment with his view that Spain had been far superior to Argentina.
For Simón, the headline number remained seven: seven matches without letting one in, a new World Cup record as reported by Telemundo, and the biggest prize in the sport to close the tournament.
