Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce may have filled Madison Square Garden for their wedding, but Eric Stonestreet says the night still felt strikingly grounded.

The Modern Family actor spoke to People about attending the couple’s July 3 ceremony in New York City with his wife, Lindsay Schweitzer. Stonestreet said the scale of the event was obvious, but what stayed with him was the way Swift and Kelce carved out a private-feeling celebration under very public circumstances.

“It was awesome,” Stonestreet told People, adding that he assumed most details of the night had already made their way into public view.

Stonestreet said he and Schweitzer tried to be careful guests before and after the wedding. He told People they were mindful about respecting the couple’s privacy and did not want to look around for details they were not meant to see. After others began sharing information publicly, he said, they felt comfortable saying they were happy to have been included.

The actor also explained why he was on the guest list. He told People he knows Swift “a little bit” and had presented her with the Favorite Country Female Artist honor at the American Music Awards in 2012.

His connection to Kelce goes back through football. Stonestreet said he had watched Kelce since the Kansas City Chiefs drafted him and had seen him through different chapters of his life.

“So when they started dating, we were so happy for him,” Stonestreet told People. He added that he was also pleased for Swift because, in his view, he knew the kind of person Kelce was.

Stonestreet said the wedding gave the couple room to celebrate without the chaos that often follows them. His favorite part, he told People, was seeing Swift and Kelce create a setting where they could have the “normalcy” he felt they deserved.

That setting just happened to be Madison Square Garden, with security in place to keep the event safe, according to Stonestreet. He said the arrangement allowed the couple to have the evening to themselves.

Stonestreet also praised the couple for what he described as a generous gesture toward their invitees. He told People that welcoming guests to the event was a gift in itself, and he said the couple also made charitable donations in New York, Kansas City and other places.

The wedding was held in front of about 1,000 guests, according to prior reports. The ceremony did not include large wedding parties. Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her “man of honor,” while Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, was best man.

Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, according to prior reports. His advice to the newlyweds was short and sweet: “Kiss every chance you have, every day.”

For Stonestreet, the big takeaway was not just the guest list or the venue. He told People he was glad to celebrate the couple’s relationship with them in New York City, calling the experience a treat.
