An Ohio man is sharing a $20,000 scratch-off win with his grandmother, turning their longtime ticket-buying tradition into an Ohio man splits lottery prize grandma story. Alan, identified only by his first name, told the Ohio Lottery he plans to divide the money after his $10 ticket produced a larger prize than he first believed.
Alan bought the Holiday 50X the Money Scratch-Off at Toronto Gas & Go in Toronto, Ohio, according to Fox 8 Cleveland and UPI. He scratched the ticket in the parking lot and initially thought it had won $2,500.
He took the ticket inside for a scan and learned the prize was $20,000, the outlets reported, citing Ohio Lottery information.
What happened with Alan's Ohio Lottery ticket?
Alan and his grandmother have played scratch-off games together for years, according to UPI. Fox 8 reported that Alan used to ride with her when she went to buy tickets, and now drives her because she is older.
The $20,000 figure is the advertised prize, while the reported take-home amount after taxes is $14,650, Fox 8 said, citing the Ohio Lottery. The reporting does not say whether the pair divided the gross prize or the after-tax proceeds, or how much either person received.
Alan said his portion would go toward bills. His grandmother said she planned to spend her share on her grandchildren, giving them “a little extra,” according to Fox 8.

The Holiday 50X the Money game's top prize is $500,000. As of Oct. 30, the Ohio Lottery information cited by Fox 8 showed three top prizes still available.
