The Avengers are back on the board, and viewers showed up fast.

The first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday drew 503 million views in its first 24 hours, Variety reported. That makes it the second-largest movie trailer launch recorded, behind Sony’s upcoming Marvel title Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which Variety said reached 719 million views.

The number also gives Disney a new in-house high-water mark. Variety reported that Doomsday passed the studio’s previous trailer record, the 2024 Super Bowl teaser for Deadpool & Wolverine, which logged 365 million views, including the game broadcast.

Marvel starts the countdown

Disney and Marvel Studios began warming up the audience last December with four teaser trailers for Avengers: Doomsday. The official trailer arrived July 20, just days before Marvel’s planned Comic-Con presentation, where Variety reported the film is expected to have a major presence.

The movie is scheduled to open Dec. 18. It is the first major MCU team-up since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, according to Variety, and the trailer points to a collision between the Avengers, the X-Men and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Variety reported that the trailer features a sprawling lineup, including Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Letitia Wright as Black Panther and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Downey’s role as Doctor Doom is one of the central hooks for the film. The actor previously defined the MCU as Tony Stark, and Variety’s report identifies his new character as the villain facing off against the assembled heroes.

Tickets are already moving

Disney tied select advance ticket sales to the trailer rollout, and the early cash register rang loudly. Variety reported that Avengers: Doomsday brought in $16.5 million after its first day of ticket availability.

Studio insiders told Variety that premium-format showtimes for Thursday, Dec. 17, and Friday, Dec. 18, are already largely sold out. Exhibitors are reportedly adding more screenings for Christmas Day and later dates.

Variety cautioned that early ticket demand is not a guaranteed map of opening-weekend performance. Still, the report said first-day presales for Doomsday are twice the comparable figure for Deadpool & Wolverine, which later opened to $211 million. Variety noted that the Deadpool & Wolverine launch had all formats and screens on sale.

Avengers: Doomsday is the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Variety reported. It will arrive a few months after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with both comic-book titles expected by Variety to rank among the year’s biggest films.
