The Beach Boys concerts canceled from July 23 through Sept. 3 cover nearly 30 summer dates, with the Mike Love-led touring group saying it is taking a break before returning to the road in late September.
Variety reported that the affected run began with a scheduled Thursday night show at Wolf Trap in Virginia and stretched through a Sept. 3 appearance at the Colorado State Fair. The group is now listed as resuming performances on Sept. 24 at The Big E Arena in West Springfield, Massachusetts.
Why were the Beach Boys concerts canceled?
A message posted on Love’s Instagram account said the band would take a short pause to “recharge” before performing again in September. The post appeared with artwork reading “Gone Surfing.”
The Instagram message said playing for fans is a summer highlight for the group, especially during its celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary and the 60th anniversary of “Pet Sounds.” It added that tickets for postponed performances from July 23 through Sept. 3 will be accepted after the band’s return, and directed fans with questions to their local box office.
The updated schedule on Love’s page lists 11 upcoming performances in the fall and next year, according to Variety. Four were already planned, while seven are rescheduled dates from the postponed stretch. Variety reported that it is not yet clear whether nearly 20 other summer dates removed from the calendar will be booked again later.
Who is in the touring Beach Boys lineup?
The touring Beach Boys are led by Love, 85, the only original member still performing with that version of the group. Variety reported that Bruce Johnston retired earlier this year.
Another original Beach Boy, Al Jardine, tours separately with Al Jardine and the Pet Sounds Band. Variety reported that Jardine’s group has been booked to replace Love’s touring lineup at the Oregon State Fair in Salem on Aug. 29, one of the dates taken off the Beach Boys’ schedule.
Earlier this month, the touring Beach Boys played three nights at the Hollywood Bowl as part of the venue’s annual Independence Day fireworks shows. Variety reported that the concerts were well received, while noting that Love, though still handling many lead vocals, appeared less forceful onstage than on some recent tours. The report said John Stamos and Christian Love, Mike Love’s son, handled much of the emcee and ringleader work during those shows.
Which dates are still on the Beach Boys schedule?
The revised itinerary includes Sept. 24 in West Springfield, Sept. 25 in Quakertown, Sept. 27 in North Myrtle Beach, Oct. 9 in Bloomington, Oct. 10 in Cincinnati, Oct. 11 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Oct. 19 in Calgary, Nov. 11 and 12 at Epcot in Orlando, Nov. 13 in Bristol, Virginia, and May 8, 2027, in Enoch, Alberta.
Removed dates include stops in Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alberta, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Colorado.
