Marvel put a date and a new face on Wakanda’s next chapter: the Black Panther 3 release date is Dec. 15, 2028, director Ryan Coogler announced at San Diego Comic-Con, according to Deadline.
Coogler also revealed onstage that David Jonsson will play the adult version of T’Challa’s son, the character first seen at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Deadline reported that the character comes of age in the new film with the Wakandan throne in sight.
Who is David Jonsson playing in Black Panther 3?
Jonsson is playing Toussaint, also known as T’Challa II, according to Deadline. The character was introduced in the 2022 sequel’s post-credits scene by Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o.
That reveal connected the next generation of Wakanda to the late T’Challa, the hero played by Chadwick Boseman in the first Black Panther. Boseman died of cancer in August 2020.
Deadline reported that Denzel Washington is also in the cast, following earlier news that he was attached to the movie. Coogler appeared at the Comic-Con presentation alongside Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Jonsson, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, according to the outlet.
What happened in the previous Black Panther movies?
The first Black Panther, released in 2018, made $1.3 billion worldwide and won three Oscars, according to Deadline. The film centered on T’Challa as the ruler of Wakanda and a superhero whose reach went far beyond the hidden African nation.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever followed in 2022 and addressed T’Challa’s death within the story. Deadline reported that the sequel earned $859 million and won an Oscar for Ruth Carter’s costume design.
The sequel’s closing moments gave audiences their first look at Toussaint, whose Wakandan name is T’Challa II. Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” played as the credits rolled, according to Deadline.
Where have viewers seen David Jonsson before?
Jonsson has become a familiar name around major genre projects. Deadline noted his recent film work includes Alien: Romulus, released in 2024 and directed by Fede Álvarez, and The Long Walk, the 2025 Francis Lawrence film based on Stephen King’s book.
Coogler introduced Jonsson at Comic-Con with a reference to The Long Walk, Deadline reported. In that film, Jonsson starred with Cooper Hoffman as young men who form an unlikely bond during a deadly walking contest.
Jonsson also played Gus Sackey on HBO’s Industry and Dom in the 2023 film Rye Lane, according to Deadline.
With the date now set, Black Panther 3 is lined up as a late-2028 theatrical release and a handoff to a new T’Challa, one tied directly to the franchise’s original king.
