Chuck Russell dead at 74 is the grim news out of Hollywood, with the filmmaker’s family telling TMZ that the director died unexpectedly Wednesday at his home in the San Diego area.
Russell, born Charles Raymond Russell, built a film career that stretched from nightmare fuel to box office spectacle. He directed Jim Carrey in 1994’s The Mask, helped launch Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a leading man in The Scorpion King, and worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger on Eraser.

A cause of death has not been determined, TMZ reported. The outlet said Russell’s family is traveling to California as they look for answers.
TMZ also reported that the local fire department went to Russell’s home Wednesday afternoon after a call about a medical emergency involving an unconscious man.
What was Chuck Russell known for?
Russell’s directing career began with 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, a major entry in the Freddy Krueger franchise. A year later, he wrote and directed The Blob, the 1988 cult horror remake.
His widest pop-culture footprint came with The Mask, the 1994 Jim Carrey comedy about a mild-mannered bank clerk transformed by a mysterious green mask. TMZ reported that Russell worked with George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic on the film’s digital effects, blending live-action performance with new visual effects ideas.
The film’s visual effects work received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, according to TMZ.
Russell followed that run with 1996’s Eraser, starring Schwarzenegger, and 2002’s The Scorpion King. The latter is remembered as Johnson’s first leading role, according to TMZ.
After a long gap between films, Russell returned with I Am Wrath, the 2016 action movie starring John Travolta. He later teamed with Travolta again on Paradise City, which also featured Bruce Willis.
Russell’s last film was Witchboard, a remake of the 1986 movie. TMZ reported that he wrote and directed the 2024 project.

Russell is survived by Ania, his wife of 19 years, according to TMZ. He is also survived by his three children, Logan, Riley and Carlyn; his former wife, Patti Rao; and his sister, Anne Jacob.
Before entering Hollywood, Russell graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, TMZ reported. His credits as a director, writer and producer made him a fixture across horror, comedy and action for decades.
