Dark Matter season 2 trailer opens the Box at Comic-Con

Apple TV dropped the Dark Matter season 2 trailer inside Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, giving fans their first look at the sci-fi drama’s next trip through the Box before its August 28 premiere.

The new footage puts Joel Edgerton’s Jason Dessen back in danger. An ominous voice identifies him as a quantum physicist, while the trailer suggests someone is pursuing him. Deadline reported that the threat does not appear to be another version of Jason, the twist that powered much of the first season’s identity-bending chaos.

Dark Matter, based on Blake Crouch’s story about alternate lives and choices not taken, followed Jason in season 1 as he was abducted from his life in Chicago and forced into another version of reality. The show’s first run centered on his attempt to get back to his wife Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, and their son Charlie, played by Oakes Fegley.

When does Dark Matter season 2 premiere?

Dark Matter season 2 premieres August 28 on Apple TV. Apple also plans to launch Dark Matter: The Official Podcast the same day, hosted by author and showrunner Blake Crouch and executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, with new podcast episodes arriving alongside the series.

The season 2 setup finds the Dessen family trying to live quietly in a reality that appears safe, before another threat forces them to flee again. Crouch has referred to the world where the family has taken shelter as World 26.

The Box is the show’s reality-hopping device, a portal-like machine tied to the series’ quantum physics premise. In practical terms for viewers, it lets characters cross into lives they might have lived, with each world carrying different dangers and different versions of familiar people.

Apple’s description of the new season also points to growing fractures inside the family. Jason becomes more consumed by the Box, Daniela’s fear intensifies, and Charlie searches for stability as danger closes in on them.

Other storylines are widening, too. Amanda, played by Alice Braga, and Ryan, played by Jimmi Simpson, team up as they try to make it home. Leighton, played by Dayo Okeniyi, pursues his idea of a perfect world, while Blair, played by Amanda Brugel, is determined to stop him.

Edgerton, Connelly, Braga, Okeniyi, Crouch, Ben-Zekry and executive producer Matt Tolmach appeared during Apple TV’s two-hour Comic-Con panel. The presentation also included Matchbox: The Movie, which is set to arrive on the streamer October 9.

Speaking in Hall H, Edgerton said one of the show’s central challenges is finding a world where other versions of the characters are not present or threatening someone else’s life. He added that the role serves up situations far beyond ordinary experience.

Connelly told the crowd that Daniela’s season 2 arc deals with people repeating unresolved patterns from their past. Braga teased that Amanda reaches a utopian world, describing a place without climate change where people have empathy.

The returning season 2 cast includes Edgerton, Connelly, Braga, Simpson, Okeniyi, Fegley and Brugel.
