Ed Harris says Dutton Ranch role left him wanting out mid-shoot

Ed Harris says his run on Dutton Ranch got so frustrating that, halfway through filming the first season, he was asking his team to help him get off the show.

The actor, who plays veterinarian Everett McKinney on the Taylor Sheridan series, aired his complaints to Variety at Monday night’s premiere of Apple TV’s The Dink. In the interview, Harris said he felt “misled” about how significant his role would be in the Yellowstone spinoff.

According to Variety, Harris said he had been told before signing on that Everett would be one of four main characters in Season 1. Once production was underway, he said that did not match what he was seeing on the page or on set.

Harris told Variety he considered the part “inconsequential” and said he raised the issue with producers. His account was blunt: he felt “underused and inconsequential,” and said the response he got amounted to a shrug.

The scene that set him off

One moment in particular appears to have lit the fuse. Harris pointed to a bar scene involving Everett, Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, and Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser.

In the scene as Harris described it, Everett is talking with Beth when Rip comes in and tells Everett that it is his turn to sing. Harris said Everett went to the microphone, but the director then cut the scene and removed the song.

Harris told Variety that the cut made him furious, using a profanity-laced remark to describe his reaction. He said production told him the scene felt too upbeat for an episode that ended on a darker note.

That explanation did not satisfy him. Harris told Variety the decision was enough, in his view, to say he was voiding his contract.

Variety also posted video from the red carpet interview on X, where Harris said that before he joined the show, he had been given a different sense of what the season and his character would be.

Season 2 may offer more

Harris said he has since been told Everett will have more to do in Season 2. Even so, he described himself as “just a little frustrated” with how the first season played out.

Dutton Ranch is part of Sheridan’s expanding Yellowstone universe. The reporting did not include a public response from Sheridan, Paramount+ or the show’s producers to Harris’ criticism.

For Harris, the complaint was not about missing a single song. By his account to Variety, it was about signing on for what he believed would be a central role, then feeling pushed to the edges once the cameras were rolling.
