Futurama specials on Hulu will launch with a holiday episode in 2027

The Futurama specials Hulu fans have been waiting for are officially on the runway: Hulu has ordered three extra-long installments of the animated sci-fi comedy, with the first set to arrive in 2027 as a holiday-themed episode.
The news was revealed Saturday during the show’s morning panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where creator Matt Groening, showrunner and head writer David X. Cohen, and members of the cast and crew appeared to promote the series’ next batch of episodes.
The specials are being billed as “XXXL-Sized,” according to the announcement from the Futurama team. They are already in production and will come in addition to Season 14, which is scheduled to begin streaming next month.
When do the Futurama specials come out?
The first of the three Futurama specials is planned for 2027, according to the Comic-Con announcement. The show’s team said that first installment will be tied to Xmas, the series’ long-running futuristic spin on Christmas.
No exact release date was announced for the specials, and the team did not reveal titles or plot details for all three installments. The key point for fans is that the Hulu revival is getting more than another regular season: it is also getting a separate trio of longer episodes.
What is coming in Futurama season 14?
Before the specials arrive, Season 14 lands Monday, Aug. 3. Hulu will debut the season with two new episodes, then release additional episodes every Monday.
In the United States, the season will stream on Hulu and on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. Internationally, the new episodes will be available on Disney+.
The Futurama team also showed a Season 14 trailer during the Comic-Con panel. Hulu’s description of the season points to space pirates, lab-grown meats, romantic scams and the return of a past love for Dr. Zoidberg.
That makes Season 14 the immediate next stop for the Planet Express crew, while the larger-format specials give the series another future date with Hulu after the weekly run.
Who is in the Futurama cast?
The voice cast includes John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil Lamarr and David Herman.
Futurama was created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen. Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz serve as executive producers.
20th Television Animation, part of Disney Television Studios, is the studio behind the series. Rough Draft Studios handles the animation.
The latest order marks another extension of a show that has made a habit of surviving in the weirdest corners of the TV universe. For now, the calendar is clear: Season 14 starts Aug. 3, and the oversized specials begin their rollout in 2027.
